BASSIST OF THE MONTH
September, 2002

NOLIT ABANILLA
Gladys & the Boxers w/ k

Note: This may seems ackward to admit but for obvious reasons we are featuring Nolit Abanilla as our bassist for the month of September. Our site is still young and we are still gathering resources. So we find it convinient for us to feature someone from our ranks.

Nolit has been around playing bass. He started in his college days with a band, eventually forming LUNA, which became popular among the alternative circle. Luna, a predominantly new wave band was cause oriented following the attitudes and music of the irish band U2 yet applying the pinoy flavor. This band brought nolit to various places, performing in almost all major universities and colleges around the country. Equally billing with popular band such as the Dawn, the Youth, Hayp, Asin, Alamid, Introvoys and Joey Ayala in big music festivals. Luna was able to release a single with "Skalikasan" under Vicor Records and an independently released full length album called "Instant Myural" under BRMP Records.

Nolit left LUNA to work as a session bass player. At this point he was able to play bass for such bands as Agaw Agimat, Ysagani Ybarra, Lolita Carbon, Lastiko and a lot more. Eventually, nolit was chosen to form a band for Backroom Inc. - a talent management headed by Boy Abunda. This band would then back up showbiz singers such as Dessa, Ima Castro, AiAi Delas Alas, Ara Mina, Rufa Mae Quinto, Calvin Millado, Ariel Rivera, Regine Velasquez, and a lot more. Nolit was also a regular in the rhythm section of the country's top comedy band Gladys and the Boxers w/ k. Nolit has been with this band for more than four years now.

Nolit looks up to Paul McCartney, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan, Jaco Pastorius, John Taylor and John Myung as among his influences. Though he loves to listen to a wide variety of musical styles. He plays on his Ibanez Soundgear 5 string bass, or an Ibanez Soundgear 4 string bass to a Zoom BFX708 effects processor.

The bassist got his music education from Yamaha School of Music under the tutulage of young classical guitarist-Julius Esteban. He also took up a few units of College of Music at PWU. He graduated Bachalor of Fine Arts at PWU and works a day job freelancing as a web designer. Nolit has his own website which displays almost all of nolit's interests including those outside music. Come and visit it at www.nolit.freeyellow.com
