BASSIST OF THE MONTH
February, 2003

SONNY "Ebaj" AZURIN
Session Bassist

Probably the busiest session bass player of the country, Sonny Azurin is now most sought after bassist by musical directors and concert artists. Packed with a five stringer, a sharp mind and a really good eye for reading, sonny has been delivering us those bass grooves which made really good impressions on the Filipino music scene.

Unlike band members of popular ones who most oftenly are upfront, session players are those behind the scenes of popular concert artists such as Regine Velasquez, Pops Fernandez, Martin Nievera, etc. Session players takes much discipline in order to deliver a really solid musical backbone to support the singers. They are seldom scene doing theatrics onstage but they lay down what it takes to be the bass of the band.

Sonny has been around for such a long time in the Filipino music scene. In the 70s he has played with the Public Opinion Band which played all over asia. Later on he has sessioned for tons of artists both foriegn and local. Among which include David Pomeranz, Michel Legrand, Michael Johnson, Ms. Angela Bofill, Christopher Cross, Rex Smith, Kenny Rankin, El DeBarge and Ms. Patti Austin. He has played on the 3-locally produced albums of David Pomeranz, most notably the 10X Platinum album "Born For You", "The Eyes of Christmas" and the newly released "On This Day".

If not catching ebaj on stage, you can also see his bass grooves on albums of Eddie K, John Lesaca, Smokey Mountain, Ariel Rivera, the Company, Inang Laya, Regine Velasquez, Labuyo, Agot Isidro, Martin Nievera, David Pomeranz, Jacqui Magno, and a lot more.

Sonny took up Solfeggio and Basic Functional Harmony classes at UP Conservatory of Music but he is basically self-taught musician. He has a array of artillery including a Status Graphite Energy 5-String, TUNE Bass Maniac CUstom 5-string, KYDD 5-String EUB, Yamaha Attitude converted 5-string Fretless, and Takamine 4-string ABG. Though he gives much credit to "my old trusty Zoom-506 tweaked to my specs". Much interesting here is the way ebaj chooses to hear his guitar on stage. A wedged monitor speakers onstage will do.

Aside from playing the bass, ebaj loves tinkling with his computer, notating arrangements and arranging. If you have questions, technical or academic, swing into our message board and sonny azurin or any other bassist will be happy to reply.
